PROBLEM
I started my research with a question in mind: How, if the technology was available, would the artists and designers of the Russian Constructivist period have used it to enhance their messages?

SOLUTION
I focused around the central Constructivist idea that art should not be a means of personal expression, but rather used for politics or influence. In Constuctivism, art and design were reflections of the industrial world, with emphasis placed on building and construction.
I took visual inspiration from Aleksandr Rodchenko and Kazimir Malevich, appropriating Malevich’s oil on canvas Suprematist Painting for the setting of the motion graphic.
The general concept is simple: a ball moves through an abstract space. However, there is deeper meaning. As the ball moves through the Malevich painting, the piece of art is transformed into a concrete, built world, which is exactly what Constuctivists wanted art to evolve into.
Considering AR’s relationship to Constructivism is also interesting. Decades ago Constructivism changed the way a whole society was influenced by art, and today AR is changing the way a new generation experiences art.

OUTCOMES
The finished piece includes a printed poster that serves as a trigger image and a motion graphic overlay that can be experienced through Artivive, an augmented reality app available for free on smartphones.
