Dauntless: The Lost Town
Archives Vignette // 2020
OVERVIEW
Working as a Graphic Design Summer student at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, I had the opportunity to design an Archives vingette exploring Dauntless, a town outside of Medicine Hat that busted as fast as it boomed.

PROBLEM
A challenge for this project was presenting historical information in a way that engaging to viewers. The archivist that compiled the information for this exhibtion had the rough idea of a detective “crazy wall” aesthetic to present the information as a mystery, so I took that and ran.

SOLUTION
Using the detective crazy wall aesthitc for inspiration, I brainstormed components that that might be included during an actual inverstigation: sticky notes, pushpins, string and eveidence all arranged on corkboard.
Because this exhibition takes place on a 23 x 20 ft wall, the exhibition components had to be blown up to fill the space. Rather than have materials printed on vinyl and stuck flat to the wall, I had them printed on paper so they would hang loosely on the wall, mimicing the tactile nature of a real crazy wall. To further engage the space, I brought the exhbiition off the wall by staging an old school desk with more evidence and props.

OUTCOMES
The vignette was on display at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in the Gallery Foyer October 10, 2020 to January 29, 2021. A virtual tour was also created so audiences could view the exhibition during pandemic closures.
In addition to designing the vignette, I was created promotional materials in various print and digital formats.
