Master Plumber

Typographic Photo Story // 2019

OVERVIEW

Using type, images, and the interaction between the two, I created a photo story that is reflective of the time I spent at my dad’s plumbing shop growing up.

PROBLEM

The interaction of type and photographic images has long been of interest for designers. Done effectively, this technique can result in more interesting compositions and a deeper understainding of the message.

After deciding upon the subject matter of my photo story — my time spent growing up at my dad’s plumbing shop — it was then a matter of playing with text and images, arranging them to form connections that are playful, meaningful, direct, or ambiguous.
SOLUTION

The title of the photo story, Master Plumber, is duplicitous in that it is the name of a Canadian plumbing outfitter (whose branding I appropriated for the cover), as well as a concept I had of my dad. The ongoing narrative is told in the voice of my younger-self. Run-on sentences and a child-like innocence are paired with the immanent reality of growing up and self-reflection throughout the story.

The connection between the photos and text drove my design decisions. Finding clever ways to have them interact was a fun challenge that led to interesting results. This can be seen in many of the spreads. For example, on a spread containing a photograph of a vice grip, I decreased the leading of the body text so it looks like it is being squished in a vice.
OUTCOMES

The final product is a 36 page coil bound book.
