		<description>
	Sierra Zukowski is a creative designer; emerging curator;&#38;nbsp;renaissance human, living, working and playing in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Sierra has difficulty with metaphorically sitting still, and as such, in her “spare” time, can be found playing and coaching sports, cooking, reading, writing, gardening, attempting to play guitar, getting better at crosswords and sudoku or perhaps something else entirely. Being interested in everything* stops her mastering anything, but she’s okay with that. Sierra is bad at saying no (but getting better), hate’s being wrong (but is getting more comfortable with it) and drinks her coffee black (in case you wanted to bring her one).&#38;nbsp;
With a perpetually open mind and insatiable curiosity, Sierra is constantly seeking to try new things, discover new ideas and make new connections. Her diverse interests and process-based approach help fuel a multi-facetted creative practice which she essentializes as creative problem solving.

		<description>F(read)
Social Justice Design // 2019

	OVERVIEW

F(read) (pronounced freed) is a puzzle book aimed to help combat illiteracy. When designing this book, my main goals were to provoke both a reaction and a response from the viewer. &#38;nbsp;
*DESIGN PROCESS BLOG
*TAGS // Graphic design, Publication, Print, Student

	PROBLEM
In the words of David Berman, “Don’t just do good design…do good.” Designers hold a lot of power and responsibility. We construct messages and influence thoughts. If we use this power for good even just a fraction of the time, a lot of change could happen.

For this project, I was challenged to design something to function as an emitter of positive change. After choosing the social issue of illiteracy, I had to find a way to attract attention to the cause and have impact so that people would feel compelled to act.

	SOLUTION
Inspired by the excitement of learning how to read and the things I liked to do as a young learner, I decided to design a puzzle book. You know, the kind that parents give kids to distract them but also have them learn something at the same time.

F(read) is no ordinary puzzle book though. The introduction explains it is for adults who may have forgotten the wonder of words. Going through the book further, however, it becomes apparent that the real purpose of the book is to get well-off, educated people to empathize with the issue of illiteracy. The puzzles and games are designed so that for a short moment, the viewer is placed nto the shoes of someone who can’t read. For example, there is a word search where none of the listed words are actually in the puzzle. Other games teach potent lessons about the realities of illiteracy and further complications that stem from it.

	OUTCOMESThe final outcome is s spoof on a puzzle book that is designed to be printed economically (standard apper size, black and white, saddlestich binding method) so that it can be widely distributed. The last page is a call to action for people to donate to
help combat illiteracy.

Typographic Photo Story // 2019

OVERVIEW

	 Using type, images, and the interaction between the two, I created a photo story that is reflective of the time I spent at my dad’s plumbing shop growing up.
*DESIGN PROCESS BLOG
*TAGS // Graphic design, Publication, Print, Student

	PROBLEM
The interaction of type and photographic images has long been of interest for designers. Done effectively, this technique can result in more interesting compositions and a deeper understainding of the message.
After deciding upon the subject matter of my photo story — my time spent growing up at my dad’s plumbing shop — it was then a matter of playing with text and images, arranging them to form connections that are playful, meaningful, direct, or ambiguous.

	SOLUTION
The title of the photo story, Master Plumber, is duplicitous in that it is the name of a Canadian plumbing outfitter (whose branding I appropriated for the cover), as well as a concept I had of my dad. The ongoing narrative is told in the voice of my younger-self. Run-on sentences and a child-like innocence are paired with the immanent reality of growing up and self-reflection throughout the story.
The connection between the photos and text drove my design decisions. Finding clever ways to have them interact was a fun challenge that led to interesting results. This can be seen in many of the spreads. For example, on a spread containing a photograph of a vice grip, I decreased the leading of the body text so it looks like it is being squished in a vice.

OUTCOMES
The final product is a 36 page coil bound book.

		<description>Unbox Creative
Brand Identity // 2019

	OVERVIEW

Unbox Creative is a brand identity showcasing my design thinking methodology. Deliverables include a style guide, contract, and branded notebook.
*DESIGN PROCESS BLOG
*TAGS // Student, Graphic design, Identity, Print

	PROBLEM
Venturing out into the field of design after graduation, it is important for one to differentiate and define themselves. Enter Personal Brand Identity. The challenge was to create something different and better than anything else out there, all the while thinking locally, sustainably, and true to who I am.

	SOLUTION
After struggling to brand an identity under my name, or some variation of it, I started to think of other words or phrases that could represent me and my design philosophies. The phrase “out of the box” came to mind. I shortened it to “Unbox” and created a design and philosophy based on what it could mean to a creative agency.

Most of the things people buy come in boxes. This is generic, boring, and harmful to the environment. To unbox is to challenge conventional methods, creating a paradigm shift in the way people think about design. Smart design considers sustainability. Environmental sustainability, fiscal sustainability, and the sustainability of ideas. In order to arrive at sustainable solutions, we have to first go through the process of unboxing.

OUTCOMESBased on the ideas presented under solution, I designed my brand identity including a logo and variations, style guide, contract and a branded notebook. These were created using primarily available materials, which is both fiscally and environmentally friendly. Working this way also forced me to find clever ways to utilize and repurpose things I already had.

		<description>Mint
Zine // 2019

OVERVIEW
An underground zine designed in the appropriated style of Lotta Nieminen. The subject of the zine is my Canadian coin collection.
*DESIGN PROCESS BLOG
*TAGS // Student, Graphic design, Publication, Print

	PROBLEM
Conceptualize, design, and produce an underground zine.
After choosing the subject of my Canadian coin collection, I had to present the information in away that made coins something my peers wanted to look at and learn about.
Another problem was figuring out the logistics of indie publishing a small run of my zine.

	SOLUTION

To create visually interesting layouts, I combined illustration, graphic design, and typography. I found connections between Nieminen’s projects and my subject matter to add meaning. For example, the title of the zine, Mint, is a play on where coins are made and one of Nieminen’s design projects that uses the colour mint and similar type to what I used. This clever polysemy is found throughout the zine.&#38;nbsp;

For production, I printed on old sketchbook paper with two pages in each book on old maps that, relating to the coins displayed on them. The zine is bound with gold fasteners that mimic the shape and colour of coins and allow for pages to be added as the collection grows. Gold foil appears in places as Nieminen uses foiling a lot in her work and the material resembles the metallic shine of coins.

	OUTCOMES
Four copies Mint were produced, each of them printed, trimmed, bound and foiled by me.&#38;nbsp;
